Pearl Jewelry – 1

dsc_2197
This is my latest craze. I want to learn jewelry making/beading. I bought lot of stuff last week and this week. This is my first complete set. Have so much to improve, but I already love it.

I got a big bunch of white beads(don’t know if they are pearls, but atleast they look like pearls). They are a collection of different sizes and slightly different shades. I thought I had used same shade for the necklace, was very careful, but when taking picture, I realized they are of slightly different shade. Have to be more careful next time. Don’t want to redo this one. So I will keep this as it is,

I also need different kind of thread. I don’t like the wire that I used to make the necklace. It is too stiff.

    Very cute :)

I bought some invisible nylon thread recently for sewing and reading your last few lines, I’m thinking such a strong but invisible nylon thread would be perfect for this.

    Shilpa: Thanks Nupur.

    Wow! nice one…
Love the pink stones that you have added. Do you need any special tools to make this?

Shilpa: M, Frankly speaking, I don’t know which materials to use. I just picked up some and tried.

If you need some cord, then I would recommend Beadsmith thread/cord. These are good if you want to tie knots between beads (especially pearls) or simply strand beads. If you need a slight stiffer thread, then softflex is very good (it comes with a thin wire in the thread). Softlex can be pretty expensive. If you are using a beading thread, use “thread heaven” conditioner so that they dont rot. There are a lot of beading magazines (like bead and button, beadstyle). A years subscription can cost around $20 for 12 issues. I used these magazines to get started. I still have them after 5 years. Maybe your local library will have them.

    Hope this helps!

Shilpa: Thanks for the tips Rinku. I will look for these materials and magazine.

Knotting of pearls using silk thread is a very common technique (mainly because pearls are so delicate) and the result is usually amazing. It does take some practice is all…check this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjjKy5aBsws

The necklace looks so pretty! I got into the jewelry making craze too some years ago and bought a ton of tools and supplies, but have a bunch of half-done projects, coz I keep jumping around between knitting, sewing, crochet, embroidery and this – like a grasshopper! . Its not good – coz u end with lots of half-done projects and nothing gets completed. Anyway, one of the threads I use for some of my beading is fishing tackle wire (just buy it at Walmart in the fishing aisle) – its dirt cheap and there’s a large amount. I find it easy to work with as well. I found it good for beginner projects. Silk thread is lovely for pearls, as someone mentioned above.
